Preparing Blood Supplies for Holiday During a Pandemic

Sioux Falls, SD- The push continues to supply local hospitals with blood needed to treat critically ill patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. As the holiday season approaches, there is an added concern in maintaining a solid blood supply for local area hospitals. Historically, there is a trending downward curve in blood donations from Thanksgiving to Christmas, with many people involved with holiday preparation and travel diverting their time and attention from volunteer opportunities.

“According to the American Association of Blood Banks, more hospitals (55.5%) received alerts from blood suppliers that they are unable to meet typical inventories required in the month of November.”

“Locally, we have been able to meet the need for blood transfusions but have seen some of the worst shortages in our community since Community Blood Bank’s inception in 1976,” states Kenneth Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank. “There is a real concern about what the holiday season will look like with blood donations, as we usually see a decrease in collections of about 25% throughout the holidays. This would be tragic for our communities as we are already tracking a 35% decrease in overall donations over the last 6 months due to the COVID crisis. We are very grateful for the amazing support provided by community members and look to forward to local donations remaining strong through the completion of 2020.”
