Sheldon Police Department / SCAT and Fire Department / EMA Compete to Help with Winter Blood Shortages

Sheldon, IA- Sheldon Police Department / SCAT and Fire Department / EMA will compete to see which department can recruit the most blood donors for the community’s blood supply during the 12th Annual “Heroes Behind the Badges”.

This fun competition between the departments will be held on two different dates and locations beginning with Tuesday, February 5 at Village Northwest Unlimited from 7:30 am to 10:20 am and Sanford Sheldon Medical Center from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm on the same day.  The Heroes event will continue with a blood drive on Monday, February 25 from 10:00am to 1:30pm and 3:00pm to 5:00pm at the Community Services Building (Sheldon, IA).  The public is encouraged to designate their blood donation in honor of the department of their choice.  The department with the most donations will receive the traveling trophy and bragging rights for the year.

“Poor weather driving conditions has been the cause of many traumas in the last couple of weeks, depleting the local blood supply to a “Critical” needs status,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank.  “When you donate to Community Blood Bank, your donation directly impact the blood supply for Sanford Sheldon patients, no other blood bank entities supply blood to Sanford Sheldon.  We encourage those that are feeling well and healthy to help support the blood supply during a difficult time to keep supplies at healthy levels. This challenge between the two departments provides the public a chance to say “thank you” to the local heroes that make a significant impact in many lives throughout the year.”

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health.  It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood.  Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation.  For more information about the Heroes Behind the Badges event log onto www.cbblifeblood.org  or call Sheldon Chamber and Development at 712-324-2813, Sanford Sheldon Medical Center at 712-324-6035.
