Watertown Heroes Behind the Badges Scheduled to Make the Difference

Watertown, SD- Watertown Police and Fire Departments will compete to see which department can recruit the most blood donors for the community’s blood supply during the holidays in the 17th Annual “Heroes Behind the Badges”.

The blood drive event will be held on Thursday, December 20th from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm and Friday, December 21st from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Watertown Mall.  The public is encouraged to designate their blood donation in honor of the department of their choice.  The first 300 donors will receive a $5Beef Bucks, compliments of Hy-Vee, County Fair Foods, and Coteau Hills Cattlemen’s Association.  All who donate will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of five $100.00 Beef Bundles, compliments of Coteau Hills Cattlemen’s Association, Dakota Butcher and the Beef Industry Council.

The department with the most donations will receive the traveling trophy and bragging rights for the year.  Blood donors can join KWAT live on Friday morning to donate blood and receive special coffee and cinnamon rolls, (compliments of Prairie Lakes Healthcare System).

“This annual competition between local heroes in the community provides encouragement and education about the need for blood in our community throughout the most difficult time of year to keep up with demands.  Community Blood Bank see many new donors as well as those that have donated blood for many years come out to support our community heroes and blood supply just before the holiday week,” states Ken Versteeg, Executive Director, Community Blood Bank.  “Through the tremendous support from the Watertown Fire Department, Police Department and community blood donors, we are able to provide blood to local patients requiring surgery, treatment of cancer, trauma’s and many other medical conditions at Prairie Lakes Healthcare System.”

Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health.  It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluids prior to donating blood.  Please bring an ID with you at the time of donation.  For more information about the Heroes Behind the Badges event log onto www.cbblifeblood.org or call Community Blood Bank at 1-877-877-3070.
