Pipestone, MN – The annual “Pipestone Heroes Behind the Badges Blood Drive” will be held Monday, August 21 between 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. Donors will have a chance to show their support for their community heroes, give blood to support local patients, and sure up the blood supply to complete the summer. Donors can schedule their donation by logging onto www.cbblifeblood.org, selecting “events”, and August 21st or call 605-331-3222. Walk-ins are welcome, appointments are preferred. All who donate receive a D.Q. meal certificate and a t-shirt.
The Heroes Behind the Badges is a friendly competition between the Pipestone County Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department, and Ambulance to recruit blood donors for community patients. The winning department receives bragging rights for the year and the traveling trophy. Over the course of 17 years, the Pipestone Heroes Behind the Badges has provided over 1,200 blood donation, providing hope up to 3,600 local area patients.
“As summer enters the last few weeks, many people are trying to sneak in their final vacations, summer activities, and enjoy time with friends and family. This becomes the most challenging time of the year to encourage residents to give blood,” states Lauri Hoffmann, Program Coordinator, Community Blood Bank. “The demand placed on the local blood supplies is unpredictable as some traumas could require up to 40 units; this is in addition to regular usage for surgeries, cancer treatment, and child deliveries. In 30 minutes donors can provide lifesaving blood to 3 local patients. If a person is looking for a way to give back this summer, consider donating blood. The process is simple and could even save the life of someone in your immediate family, a loved one, or a neighbor. The action of donating could provide a lifetime of hope for someone critically ill. Join us at Pipestone County Medical Center Monday, August 21.”
Donors must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with a signed parent consent form found at www.cbblifeblood.org), weigh 110 lbs or more and be in good general health the day of the donation. Please bring an I.D. It is recommended that a person eat and drink plenty of fluid prior to donating. Community Blood Banks is a nonprofit, cooperative of Sanford Medical Center and Avera McKennan Hospital. Community Blood Bank is not associated with any other blood bank organizations and is the sole blood provider to Pipestone County Medical Center. A person can donate blood every 56 days.
